Spring is coming up soon, and you know what that means. It’s time to start sprucing up your outdoor space so you can really enjoy the warm weather from the comfort of your own backyard!

Is your yard looking kind of drab? Yeah, we’ve been there. It’s just a patch of dirt and grass, so what are you supposed to do about it? We’re here to offer a few fun suggestions that can immediately boost your yard’s aesthetic.

Read on for some of our favorite outdoor decoration ideas.

Improve Your Lighting

Are you able to enjoy your backyard at night? If it’s not well-lit, the answer is probably a resounding “no,” right? It’s time to upgrade your backyard’s aesthetic by improving your lighting. Don’t worry, it’s easy and you have plenty of options.

What part of your yard do you want to highlight? If you’re prioritizing your greenery, consider contacting landscape lighting installation experts to help you out. They’ll be able to install subtle but beautiful lights around all of your favorite parts of your backyard to truly show them off.

Perhaps you want to highlight your patio area or sitting area. If that’s the case, string lights are a great option. You can weave them in-between fence posts to light up the perimeter of your backyard or string them overhead either along your roof overhang or strung between posts.

They add a warm and sweet glow to any backyard.

Alternatively, you can just upgrade whatever outdoor lights your home came with and swap them out for fun-colored bulbs. This is great for any outdoor party nights.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, consider setting up some fun tiki lights. These are best for parties, but you can use them whenever you want a warm and fiery glow.

Add Some Extra Greenery

What’s a backyard without some cool plants? Whether you have a lush and grassy backyard or a tiny apartment yard with a cement patio, there’s always room for more greenery. You may just have to be creative.

If you have a large backyard with plenty of space to plant things, try layering your plants. This means that you’re creating different “size layers” to add visual interest. For example, you may have a small flowering tree in the back layer, a large floral bush in the next layer, some medium-sized standard flowers in the next layer, and some small and low succulents in the front layer.

This creates a unique appearance that looks super lush.

If you don’t have much yard space, you’re going to rely on plant pots. Take advantage of vertical space here. You can either create a true vertical garden or you can do something creative, like stacking plant pots on rungs of a ladder or on a shelf.

Consider using native plants in your garden. They’re far better for the environment and they’ll be easier to grow. They’re used to growing in your local climate, so even if you don’t exactly have a green thumb, you should have no problem with them.

One more quick tip. If your backyard is just a concrete patio, consider adding artificial turf. This will give you the appearance of a lush yard without the upkeep.

Create an Awesome Sitting Area

Your outdoor space can be just as cozy as your indoor space! Create a nice sitting area where you can lounge and entertain guests. Consider your backyard an extension of your indoor entertaining and relaxing space.

You can furnish your outdoor space just like your indoor space. It can have cozy couches, comfortable chairs, and a nice table (or better yet, a fire pit) for people to sit around.

Just make sure you’re using furniture that’s weather-resistant. Certain materials will hold up well against the elements and they’re easy to clean. Others will turn into a moldy nightmare before you know it.

It can also be helpful to have some sort of shade over your sitting area so you can still enjoy the outdoors if the weather isn’t perfect. A large umbrella or a retractable awning will work well for this purpose!

Make an Outdoor Kitchen

Who doesn’t want to cook outside on a hot and sunny day? During toasty summers, you don’t want to heat up your already-warm house with a hot oven. Anyway, cooking outside is a lot of fun. Everything tastes better outside.

Set up an outdoor kitchen so you can throw your dinner parties in your own yard.

Some people go all-out with their outdoor kitchens. They have full counters, refrigerators, sinks, ovens, and even stoves. This is a cool option, but it’s not super accessible for everyone. If you can make it happen, go for it, but it will require a full renovation.

Alternatively, add in some fun outdoor-friendly cooking options. A large classic grill for you to throw summer BBQ parties, a pizza oven that’s too hot to keep inside, and a bar cart for you to store all of your drinks so you don’t have to keep going inside during an outdoor party.

Add Some Fun Artwork

Artwork isn’t just for your indoor space! Decorate your yard with fun artwork to truly make it pop.

Consider a cool outdoor mural. You can paint directly on your shed wall or fence, or, if you’re a renter, you could buy a large piece of wood and paint on that instead. That way, when you move, you can take it with you.

Hang some framed pictures on your outdoor walls. Consider adding an outdoor-friendly sculpture. There are so many ways to incorporate art outside!
